The quotes around "male" in panel one are because, as one may well be aware, polite and accurate terminology regarding gender gets confusing once you throw in literal magical transformation and have to differentiate between transformed physical states while simultaneously not wishing to imply that one need be in a specific physical state to be a particular gender.

In short, the quotation marks are intended to signify the technical incorrectness of the statement (the statement nonetheless being made because English is ill-equipped for this sort of scenario).
