Commentary

Posted October 27, 2025 at 12:00 am

Firstly, my apologies again for putting up the wrong version of last Wednesday's page without the "I'm taking Friday off" announcement in big letters. After this incident, I don't think I'll forget to double check for such things in the future.

And now, Proper Commentary:

- Not Enchanted mode (shows actual forms)

- The mirror established as After-Before order

- After seeing their mother's Before state, sees After, then switches to off

- Arthur receiving details about the mirror and Tedd "fixing" it

- Hope raising the blanket and the start of the whole intruder sequence

- Mist Zapped

I now have an entry in my "offline wiki"—a gradually growing collection of notes—on the door. Part of the reason why is I found myself needing to decide how exactly the user interface for a magic door with one dial—the door knob—and one button—the latch—worked while keeping it consistent with previous canon.

I could just not explain how it works at all, and it would be fine, but I want what they're doing while interacting with the door to be consistent. Because of that, even if I wasn't sharing it, I needed to know.

What I found was that four things needed to be true for consistency:

  1. One turns the dial to see the "After" and "Before" of stored forms, and "After" had to be first because that's been shown.

  2. "Before" had to be able to go directly back to "After", as that was also shown.

  3. It had to be possible to go directly from "After" to "Off".

  4. There had to be a way to access "Not Enchanted"—showing people as though not enchanted—without it being part of the "After-Before" cycle.

My solution was two sets of cycles. "Off" and "Not Enchanted" are together, and "After" and "Before" are together. A simple solution, but my goodness did I stress over it before getting there.

The charging flaw

This hasn't been stated in the comic, so it's subject to change, but I currently have it written that holding the latch in for three seconds while "Off" is what's supposed to manually start charging mode for twelve hours. Using the mirror during that time is supposed to bring it out of charging mode.

Also tentatively: Using the mirror in charging mode actually resets the timer, and casting any spells in view of the mirror will also reset—or start—that same twelve hour charging period. Whoopsie!
