An anime based on Anne of Green Gables—title Anne Shirley—came out this year, and you can thank THAT for the buddies nonsense in panel two.
This is a bit tangential, but I'm fairly certain I hadn't read that book, yet there were bits of the anime that gave me déjà vu. In particular, an incident involving hair dye. It's not like the books haven't been adapted several times before. Maybe I knew something of it and forgot.
Or maybe I had a past life in which I, too, made a poor decision about buying things from a door-to-door salesmen. I can't prove that's not the case, so I can say with complete logic that such a possibility is on the table.
