I considered many, many options for Jeremy's move pool, ability, EV spread, etc. while training him. Ultimately, however, if he was going to stand any chance against a variety of opponents—opponents he'd be expected to be able to fight—I knew he needed a special ranged attack.
Fortunately, Jeremy has access to the move "whatever the heck this is with the needles", and I made sure he knew it.
Jeremy's default ability, "run away", wouldn't be useful during a "stop an antagonist from stealing stuff" battle, so I opted for his hidden ability "void". Void prevents certain attacks from affecting Jeremy, giving him more of a chance against opponents who could otherwise just metaphorically—or literally—punt him out of their way and move on.
