To be clear, the implication is that Ellen didn't even bring it up. The king was just trying to make her happy.
I wasn't sure about including this development, but then I remembered that, regardless of more serious moments of introspection, this is ultimately a comedy fairy tail in which the fairy godmother has made a business out of pumpkins-turned-carriages. If I want the king to suddenly make gay marriage legal, the king can suddenly make gay marriage legal.
Which doesn't negate the whole "this is about future heirs" issue, but still. Way to go by complete accident, Princess Ellen.
