Hope's overall design has basically always been a mix of Susan, Diane, Raven, Pandora herself, and Sarah. Sarah's influence is mostly absent here, however, because Sarah's aspect is Hope's outfits. When choosing Hope's outfits, I ask, "would Sarah wear this?" If the answer is yes, it's a valid Hope outfit.

Hope's version would be a palette swap of something Sarah would wear, but still.

I chose the hair highlights to go with the outfit, but they might keep consistent. It looks a bit purplish to me, which I like. Sneak some Tedd influence in there.

Alchemist Santa Ellen on Patreon

What it was Santa Ellen was attempting to accomplish was unclear. Given the antlers, one could be forgiven for assuming it had something to do with reindeer. She insisted this was incorrect, however, and that the experiment had absolutely nothing to do with reindeer.

All she would say was that it was an "experiment of merriment," and that, no, her nose didn't glow. Given that her nose actually did glow when all the lights were off, however, many of her claims were called into question.

She did, at least, wish everyone a merry Christmas and happy holidays before grabbing Tedd and dashing back into her workshop with them.

Caught off-guard by the invitation to the magic tea shop, Ashley shook her head, and claimed she'd never been there before. She soon regretted this lie, for Grace and Sarah immediately insisted on introducing her to it. 

Once there, Ashley did everything in her power to distract Grace and Sarah from seeing the plaque celebrating her as a regular, and exceptionally enthusiastic, customer.

As tends to happen with sitcom-style hijinks, these attempts at distraction escalated, inevitably resulting in Ashley drinking far more tea than even she regularly would, and with all sorts of varied side effects.

Ashley wound up admitting to it in the end anyway, as there's only so long Ashley of all people could keep lying without something greater being at stake than her embarrassment.

Miraculously, this confession was the only reason Grace and Sarah learned the truth. At no point had they ever noticed the plaque.

Fun fact, this MIGHT be the first glimpse of Tedd's lab. Like, if I had to choose a canonical location for this to be happening, that would be it. At least part of it logically has to look like a generic SCIENCE! classroom (it's in a college, and Tedd's cover is an independent study), so yeah. That could be a corner of that part of the lab.

I hadn't planned for Nanase and Fox to be working at a café. I had originally just planned for them to be wearing an outfit I'd sketched, and for Nanase to find the situation a bit awkward while possibly posing for Ellen?

But then it came time to color it, and several trains of thought collided on some sort of fox theme that looked to me like an unusual waitress uniform to me, so... Here we are.

Dan's Choice - Temp Elves - On Patreon

Larry, Rich, and George weren't entirely clear on what they were meant to be doing as Santa Ellen's temporary elves, but Larry and George immediately agreed to it, and Rich experienced a fear of missing out strong enough to agree shortly after.

Larry's tendency to absent-mindedly tap his own head with the striped magic wand he'd been given (which, for some reason, looked like a drumstick) did result in additional awkwardness, however.

I definitely wanted to have a Christmas sketchbook this year, but it doesn't really feel a lot like Christmas for me this year, so I wasn't sure what I was in the mood to do.

And then I imagined elf girl Rich as seen here, and I wanted to draw that. Rich is just a very transformable character to me (he cheats a bit by having blue hair).

So the end result is a very self-indulgent sketchbook! Hopefully others like it as well. For everyone who prefer characters not change shape this much, I know you're out there, and I intend to do something with these three in feminine forms closer to their default forms later.

Finally meeting, and openly sharing information, Rhoda told Ashley of her magic, and all the things she could do with it.

Ashley, not having much in the way of unique magic, wanted to share something personal with Rhoda. Awkwardly, she spoke of various stories she's written, and how Rhoda's spells could be used in them.

Unbeknownst to either of them, their minds then went to exactly the same place.

Elliot and Tedd didn't know why Ashley and Grace encouraged them to do certain things, but they never questioned it, either.

Ashley, Grace, and Tedd help Elliot demonstrate the differences in height between his many forms (by using clone forms in which only the hair and eye colors don't change).

Also, note to self, ask Ashley if she's ever considered a hairstyle like, because holy carp that's adorable.

Ellen COULD have helped with this, but she had a feeling that Ashley would love the excuse to transform into Elliot's default feminine form, so she claimed she had to go solve a mystery with Nanase.

Which wound up being true, but she didn't know it was going to be.

Tedd had very conflicted feelings about Grace in Elliot's form, and also wound up thinking about Elliot in Grace's form, which only made things worse for Tedd.

Tumblr nonsense

I wrote this as preview text for Tumblr, and decided I liked it enough to add to the commentary:

When you have multiple forms, the obvious solution to comparing the heights is to turn your friends into other versions of yourself. Obviously.

And keep their hair and eye colors the same so they're easy to identify. Obviously.

No, it has nothing to do with making the image more visually interesting, or seeing what someone might look like with purple hair. This is simply how you measure height.

Oh noes! The mean, elitist cheerleader Ashley was bullying the misunderstood, loner goth Grace! Now Grace has given in to magical nonsense, and is transforming her bully!

Okay, so, OBVIOUSLY, this is just a couple of gal pals acting out a story one of them wrote. A totally common thing for gal pals to do.

Hearing about this later, Diane, a former cheerleader herself, had no idea how to react. She wanted to argue against the mean cheerleader stereotype, as she knew for a fact that most cheerleaders were hard-working, lovely people.

But she also knew she'd acted like a bully sometimes, and didn't want anyone to bring that up.

In the end, she simply asked if she could join them the next time they did something like it.

Now, the story behind THIS is, um... Nanase got a new spell, and... She, Rich, Larry, and George were at the comic shop, and... 

Uuuuhhhhhh...

Okay. Cards on the able? I just wanted to experiment with characters taking on the form of other characters while keeping their original hair and eye colors for fun (and to help identify who's who in scenarios more complicated than this).

I decided to keep the eye colors the same, too, because some characters have similar hair colors, and I figured eye color would be a secondary indication of who's who.

It's Rich's fault I experimented with this group first. Well, his blue hair to contrast with Nanase's red hair, anyway.

I'll probably do more nonsense like this with other groups of characters sometime later (not necessarily with everyone getting the same form, though that'll probably happen with Susan).

I have a fondness for characters just going about their business when transformation nonsense happens. I'm pretty sure that's a more uncommon fondness, but I do.

I also have a fondness for calling things nonsense.

An Extra Step

The voted upon sketchbook only called for Rhoda and Lucy to grow and shrink respectively, ending up the former height of the other. I had imagined this being a more dramatic difference than it was, and decided the sketchbook needed a step further while still including what was voted on as the middle step (it WAS voted on, after all).

I also wanted an excuse for the size change, and I liked the idea of Rhoda reaching for something, but I found myself not wanting Rhoda to be responsible.

So...

Who's That?

A POTENTIAL canon character. We'll see if she winds up in the main story. If not, she may still make future appearances in non-canon.

Her color scheme wound up being inspired by Magic: The Gathering card colors, of all things. Blue spells weakening creatures, and even specifically shrinking them, are common, while Green spells that make creatures bigger are VERY common.

Basically, she made me think of Blue-Green deck. I felt that was as good a reason as any to go with an analogous color scheme with blue and green on either end, and to color her magic as such.

As for the floating jewelry? I was trying various accessories, sketched those, thought "that was neat," and eventually thought having them change colors when she's doing stuff would also be neat.

It was all very carefully planned around the "that's neat" principle.

As per usual, the most difficult part about this sketchbook wasn't making it. It was getting over the intimidation of making it.

When it comes to comic, I can be a like a big dog scared a barking puppy sometimes.
